Signaling a significant step in the path toward obtaining a Full Funding Grant Agreement early next year, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation (Metro) has received an allocation of $100 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the third and final section of the Metro Purple Line Extension Project to Westwood/VA Hospital.

The allocation comes from the FTA’s Fiscal Year 2018 Capital Investment Grants Program, which invests in critical public transportation projects nationwide. FTA has advanced funding for 17 new projects under the Capital Investments Grants Program since January 2017 totaling about $4.8 billion.

“We are very grateful for the positive and productive working relationship our agency has had with the Federal Transit Administration in working to advance the Westside Purple Line Extension Project,” said Sheila Kuehl, L.A. County Supervisor and Metro Board Chair. “We are also pleased that our work toward obtaining a Full Funding Grant Agreement for this final section of the project is being favorably considered by the FTA.”

Section Three of the Purple Line Extension will span 2.6 miles between Century City and Westwood/VA Hospital and will include two new subway stations. The total cost for this section of the project is $3.56 billion. Metro has requested $1.3 billion in funding through the FTA’s New Starts Program. Metro anticipates a grant agreement will be forthcoming in early 2019.

“The FTA’s allocation is a strong sign that our subway extension project remains on track to receive federal funding,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “We are pleased to be among the agencies to benefit from FTA’s advancing of these much-needed federal transit funds, and we thank our legislative partners on Capitol Hill for their assistance in advocating for this nationally significant transportation project.”

Metro’s two earlier subway extension sections have already received federal funding and are now under active construction. Section Three of the project is scheduled to begin construction in 2019. The entire nine-mile line is on track to open by 2026, in time for the 2028 L.A. Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
