Since 1980, the LA County Library, with support from Pentel Arts, has offered a Bookmark Design Contest to encourage children to use their artistic expression to share their love of books and the written word.

This year’s theme, “Shine Bright… READ! or ¡Brilla y reluce… Lee!” was designed to inspire students and encourage reading.

Over 7,200 children and teens from across the County entered the contest, and four from different grades were chosen from each Supervisorial district.

Our Third District winners are Carolyn Kim, Lily Folkerts, Willow Abramson, and Kate Berumen.

Carolyn created her entry at the Malibu Library and is a second grader from Webster Elementary School. She enjoys creating short story books and wants to become a writer and teacher when she grows up. Lily also entered the contest at the Malibu Library and attends Webster Elementary School as a third grader. She enjoys science, art, and dance—and dreams of being a veterinarian, a biologist, or a dancer when she grows up. Willow is a seventh grader at Lindero Canyon Middle School and entered at the Agoura Hills Library. She enjoys math and wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Kate is a junior at John F. Kennedy High School and entered at the San Fernando Library. She loves theatre and film and dreams of being a cinematographer and screenwriter.

Congratulations to this year’s winners! Their artistry and creativity make us all proud!
